Sleeping Giant Is Awakening in Meriwether County

The term “Sleeping Giant” has rightly been applied to American Christianity for its indifference to all kinds of evils, especially those of an environmental nature. At the time I wrote my master’s thesis on the Biblical view of ecology 35 years ago there was almost no environmental concern, even among the church’s theological leadership. Well, it looks like the Sleeping Giant is beginning to awaken in Meriwether County in response to the realization of the horrendous damage which would be caused by the proposed Landfill. The action meeting of concerned citizens held at The Lone Oak Community Center last night was opened and closed in prayer to God, which was done sincerely, not in any perfunctory way. At several times during the discussion it was noted that Christian principles should be followed in the battle to prevent the establishment of the Landfill. AND, the next meeting of these citizens will be held in a church in Lone Oak at the invitation of the Pastor, who led in one of these prayers. This church is the Saint Paul’s CME Church on Sewell Road in Lone Oak, and the date of this meeting is
Monday night March 6 at 7:00 PM. Lest there by anyone with any question about the propriety of Christians expressing environmental concern it is easily answered by this fact about God which can be stated in four words: “God Cares About Everything!”.

Sincerely,

Forrest Schultz
